After complaints from some Republican lawmakers and conservatives over a controversial video that featured a crucifix with ants crawling over the image of Jesus, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery removed this piece of pathetic tripe from public view.
The Director of the museum, Martin Sullivan, appeared surprised by the outcry: “I regret that some reports about the exhibit have created an impression that the video is intentionally sacrilegious. The artist’s intention was to depict the suffering of an AIDS victim.”
Oh, so I guess all us unworthy ones were supposed to drop to our knees in awed adoration over this bit of barf because the so-called artist was a gay man who died of AIDS in the early 1990s. David Wojnarowicz, who spent his younger years working the streets of NYC as a prostitute, is revered by the Crapola Connoisseurs as one of ‘the most potent voices of his time’. Well, they got that right. If indeed a picture is worth a thousand words then we can safely say in our James Joycean way that we are staring at the Portrait of the Artist as a Flim-Flam Man. Such outrageous pretensions to artistic talent and emotional depth are the stock in trade of a faux fine arts cabal that wallows in a trite and trendy affectation of the avant-garde.
The curator of the National Portrait Gallery, David Ward, attempted to explain the artistic significance of this video to us sadly unenlightened yobs:
It is an example of political engagement in artistic form with the AIDS epidemic by an artist deeply concerned with the exploration of our response to that medical and societal calamity. That it is violent, disturbing, and hallucinatory precisely replicates the impact of the disease itself on people and a society that could barely comprehend its magnitude.
Really? Somehow I don’t think Mr. Ward would have been exhibiting a video showing ants crawling all over an image of Mohammed as an example of political engagement in artistic form with the epidemic of violence against women perpetrated by Sharia Law. Nor would there be any ‘artists’ out there creating videos that replicate the impact of Sharia Law on people and a society that can barely comprehend its magnitude.
If there were fanatical Christians ready, willing, and able to spend their life energies tracking down and killing all those defamers of Christian symbolism and all those pretentious purveyors of Christophobic pot boilers, you can bloody well bet that not one of these chicken shit ‘artistes’ and the garbage groupies who make a living off them would dare articulate their existential angst by desecrating images of Jesus Christ.
Time to take a big hatchet to the Smithsonian’s budget.
