In good old Great Britain, you better not walk your dog without leaving a security force to guard your home. You see, property rights in the land of snobby socialism are not respected nor protected. Breaking into a home, changing the locks, and throwing the owner’s furniture out into the street is not a crime in the god-awful farce that is now Great Britain. To the contrary, far from getting stigmatized with the stain of criminality, these house-hunting hoodlums are considered needy and deserving displaced doll babies whose quest for affordable housing justifies what us reactionaries here in America would consider outrageous and very illegal activity. But of course, us uncouth colonials, with all our compulsive constitutionality concerns, are just too backward to appreciate the brave new world of this ball-less John Bull.
Trespassing and home invasions are nothing more than a civil dispute in the UK which means the police are powerless to intervene. So when hapless Harry comes home from a quick run to the grocery store and finds a dozen Lithuanians squatting in his humble abode, poor Harry will find himself not only out of luck but also out-of-pocket, big time. Homeless Harry must now find alternative living accommodations while he takes these free-loading freaks to court. Plus, there’s also the not very minor matter of those hefty legal fees that come right out of harried Harry’s hip pocket. And through all these merry machinations, the British constabulary stands by shuffling its feckless feet.
From today’s Daily Mail:
In the middle of completely refurbishing his five-bedroom house, Connan Gupta felt he deserved a week off. It is a decision he is now regretting because 15 squatters took advantage of his short absence to occupy the £700,000 property. The jobless Italians changed the locks and have taken up residence along with their three dogs and two cats.
And the following comment on this news story from a very perplexed Yank really says it all:
This is insane! I’ve never heard of such a thing! What on earth is wrong with you people? WHY DO YOU PUT UP WITH THIS? You certainly pay enough in taxes, and I’m really curious about just what the hell you’re getting in return for them!
